Cop guilty in Parker twins surrogacy case

November 24, 2009 Edition 1

ST CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio: A police chief has been convicted of three felonies but was acquitted of burglary charges in an alleged break-in at the home of the woman who carried twin girls for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

Yesterday a jury found Martins Ferry police chief Barry Carpenter guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence. He faces a maximum 10 years in jail.

Prosecutors alleged that Carpenter broke into Michelle Ross's home in May, took items related to her pregnancy and the surrogacy, and schemed with police chief Chad Dojack of neighbouring Bridgeport to sell the items to celebrity photographers.

Ross testified that she had been staying in a hotel at the time of the alleged break-in and that on her return, she had noticed ultrasound photos and surrogacy files were gone, photos had been rifled through and a plaster cast of her stomach, made when she was pregnant with her own son, had been misplaced.

Dojack faces trial in January. - Sapa-AP
