Woman held after death of baby

An 18-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday for the murder of her nine-month-old baby and the dumping of his body in the veld near Thembisa, police said.
"Women from Meriting section got suspicious when they saw the woman walking around without the baby and on asking her, she told them she left him in the veld on Tuesday," said Captain Manyadza Ralidzhivha.
The baby's body was found wrapped in blankets and plastic when the women arrived at the open veld on Thursday afternoon.
The discovery led angry community members to beat up the mother, but she did not sustain any serious injuries, said Ralidzhivha.
"The baby's mother told the women the baby was alive when she left her there on Tuesday," he said.
The woman was expected to appear in the Thembisa Magistrate's Court on Friday, facing charges of murder. - Sapa
