The CCMA has recommended that Robben Island Museum chief operating officer Denmark Tungwana be cleared of charges levelled against him, the SABC reported on Thursday.

"We received the documentation [from the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration] this afternoon and the award is in favour of Tungwana. We will obviously study it and give a statement very soon," acting museum manager Winston Tsematse told the broadcaster.

Tungwana, who was to meet his lawyers on Friday, declined to say if he wanted his job back or not.

He was suspended in July last year following alleged financial mismanagement, estimated to run into millions of rands,
at the museum.

Tsematse said: "I don't think there's a plan to appeal. The decision will come from the department of arts and culture."

Norman Arendse, who represents the museum, said it would seek a review in the labour court. - Sapa
