Arabella defends further development

The Arabella golf estate near Hermanus and the empowerment trust it created for five impoverished Overberg communities have argued that the further development of the luxury estate would not only provide enormous economic and social benefits to the region, but would also be good for the environment.

The German-owned Arabella South Africa Holdings and the Arabella Community Trust, a broad-based black economic empowerment (BBBEE) vehicle created by Arabella, put their cases to Western Cape High Court judges Willem Louw and Lee Bozalek this week.

The Hangklip/Kleinmond federation of ratepayers had brought an application to have former
environment MEC Tasneem Essop's approval of a second development phase reviewed and set aside.

It claimed she had overemphasised the socio-economic benefits, to the environment's detriment, and had set several unsound conditions for the development.
