Two people were killed on the N1 freeway near the Okavango turn-off when the driver lost control of vehicle and it hit a tree on Saturday, Western Cape paramedics said.

The man and a woman estimated to be in their 30s died of severe injuries, Vanessa Jackson said.

She said after the vehicle left the road, it seemed to have driven into the large tree with severe force.

The front wheels of the vehicle were pushed almost into the top of the dashboard crushing the occupants' chests.

It is suspected that the driver experienced mechanical problems or a tyre had burst, Jackson said.
/> Fire and rescue workers had to cut the mangled wreckage from the tree before the two's bodies could be removed.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident. - Sapa
