In Smit's book
December 31, 2009 Edition 1
Springbok captain John Smit related how Luke Watson had a "cancerous" effect on members of the national team.
In Captain in the Cauldron: the John Smit Story, Smit says: "Luke Watson was the principal reason why the team was off-colour (in 2008). He was there under duress, he didn't enjoy his teammates, he didn't participate in team meetings, and he basically did his own thing. He never tried to become a part of us.
"I think he really wanted to play for South Africa, but couldn't stand the environment, and the truth is that he irritated the living s*** out of the guys.
"I had players in my ear about him every flipping day.
"He was referred to as 'the cancer' of the team." - Sapa
